Design Methodologies

What are Design Methodologies?

Design methodologies are various different techniques designers, including web designers, use for designing good, effective, and user-friendly products. These products can range from the physical product itself to a digital interface the product might have. For this site, the primary focus will be techniques used in web design.

User-Centered Design

In effective web design and development, many of the design methodologies used are oriented around the user rather than the company, stakeholder, or design team. User-Centered Design is a generic term for designing around the user's needs and how the design can help solve them. This is generally an effective approach to web design as the user will be the one using the site. See more on page 2.

User-Experience Design

User-experience design, or UX design as it is most commonly referred to as, is a design methodology focused on designing around the user's experiences and feelings with a product or service. UX design team conduct substantial user research and user testing to make sure the product satisfies the user's requirements and solve their problems. This is important in web design as the experiences the user has keep the site relevant. See more on page 3.

User-Interface Design

User-interface design, or UI design, are a collection of methods used to design the user's interface, which in the case of this site is a website. UI design is often used interchangeably with UX design, but is is crucial to note that they are not the same thing. Whereas UX design focuses mostly on the user's experiences and feelings with the product, UI design focuses on the visual interface that make it look good. See more on page 4.

The Design-Thinking Process

The design-thinking process is a non-linear, five-step design process that helps the design team focus their design around the user. This is an effective method for user-centered design. This process is used by user-experience designers, user-interface designers, and product-management teams alike. Steps include emphasizing with the users, defining the problem, creating ideas, prototyping, and user testing. See more on page 5.

User-centered design, UX design, UI design, and the design-thinking process are often used simultainously in the web development world.

Typically, the team has different people specializing in different areas.
