Introduction to Color Application
When users visit websites, it is unlikely that they are consciously seeking out sites because of the colors used across the site. For instance, if someone's favorite color is pink and their second favorite color is blue, it is unlikely that they are going to choose to view the website with lots of pink coloring used across the site simply for the fact that the site is pink. When we visit websites, we are consciously focused on the content, information, and products available to us on these sites, and the thought of color likely doesn’t even go through our conscious train of thought (as long as the colors or designs used aren’t particularly obscure). For these reasons, many users may be surprised to hear that colors actually have a significant impact on our perception of a website or product and that the colors used in branding and design can influence which webpages we are drawn to, even if we don’t select sites with this conscious intention.

The Impact of Color
Numerous studies conducted across the world have backed up the influence and importance of color in design and branding. Here are three statistics from a small selection of these studies:
- According to a study conducted by the University of Winnipeg, “people make up their mind within 90 seconds of interacting with a product, and 65-90% of that assessment is based on color alone”.
- A study by the University of Loyola found that color “increases brand awareness by up to 80%”.
- A survey conducted by Seoul International Color Expo found that 84.7% of the participants in their study “felt that color accounts for more than half of the factors important in choosing a product”.
All three studies from three different countries around the world all demonstrate the immense impact of color on users and customers, serving as a clear testimony of how important it is to understand color and its applications in web design when creating your own web pages.
